I had an amazing thing happen to me when I was about 11 years old.
I was a just a lad on holidays with my parents and a sister 2 years older. I was a boy scout then and was a patrol leader so was a confident 11 year old. My Dad was a doctor and fast car driver, given the fact that just 2 days before we had done a record time to our holiday destination in the family Holden Statesman De Ville.
On the second day of our holiday everyone went their separate ways and I was left with Kisha, the family dog, a cross Corgi/ Kelpie. She was a beautiful doggy, all long fur and happy smiles, keen to please and just as happy as me to go exploring..
I decided it was time to totally explore the local coastline so Kisha and I went for an extended walk, down the dirt streets and onto the rough tracks of the coast. Merimbula bay was an absolutely gorgeous sight and the track leading around it's edge was totally there to be explored by me and me pup. As we trecked further around the headland the track became narrower and narrower. There was a wee hut, built by fishermen and observers years before and this was our destination. I knew it from being driven there last time we had been on holidays but this time I wanted to access it from the track I was now on. Woops! Ive overdone my story. See next comment!

Yes anyway, we went further and there was just one more thing to negotiate and that was a large rock in the middle of the track. It didn't seem that hard to negotiate and given that Kisha had four legs to my two I decided to let her lead the way. As mentioned she had her collar and lead on by now so it was just a matter of her walking over the rock, and me following. As she jumped up and started to cross the rock she lost the plot. Not surprising given the previous situation. Unbelievably she lost her footing and simply felloff the edge of the rock! Now Kisha was hanging by her neck over a cliff with a 100metre drop!. As an intrepid 11 year old I dropped to me guts and slowwly pulled my poor doggy back to safety! You have no idea how close that dog stuck to me after that. She was a wonderful dog and companion but totally useless as a mountaineer! God bless her...............
